Kiev Barricade

Betty Ross KievI just added Kiev Barricade to my website-it’s based on a photo from the New York Times that grabbed me for dual reasons-it was stunningly beautiful and  it captured  an important struggle between Russian power and Ukrainian aspirations to be closer to western Europe and more freedom- I am moved by the bravery, the desperation, the willingness to sacrifice everything for a cause-and the struggle continues.  I hope the outcome is better than Egypt. I consider this piece a celebration of courage to change, no matter the cost. I collaged pieces of old wool and scraps of leather, just as the builders of the barricade used sticks of wood, tires, sandbags, etc.
